Hedge Laying
Hedgelaying is a traditional county craft that dates back hundreds of years. It is a skilled job, requiring a good amount of knowledge to get the best results. In simple terms, it involves partially cutting through the base of young trees (known as ‘pleaching’), and ‘laying’ said trees over at a desired angle to strengthen and rejuvenate new growth.
Historically, a laid hedge offered farmers a strong, stock-proof barrier; long before wire fencing was introduced. However, a correctly maintained hedge provides far more than just a means of natural fencing. It provides food, shelter and safe corridors for a wide range of wildlife such as birds, bats, hedgehogs, and dormice, to name but a few.
